Noise #10

눈을 뜨면 빛이 사물을 비추고, 그 빛이 우리의 망막을 거쳐 뇌로 전달되면서 세상의 형태와 색, 밝기를 인식할 수 있다. 그러나 눈을 감으면, 우리는 시각적으로 아무것도 볼 수 없는 상태에 놓이게 된다. 하지만 어둠 속에서도 서서히 떠오르는 잔상들이 있다. 마치 응시를 통해 점차 드러나는 흐릿한 이미지처럼, 우리는 시각이 차단된 상태에서도 무언가를 인식할 수 있다.

이 작업은 빛과 어둠 사이에서 일어나는 이러한 현상에 대한 탐구에서 시작되었다. 눈을 감으면 사라지는 것이 아니라, 새로운 차원에서 우리의 감각과 상상 속에서 살아나는 이미지들. 현실과 단절된 채 어두운 공간 속에서 부유하는 이 형상들은 단순한 시각적 잔상이 아니라, 우리의 기억과 의식이 뒤섞여 만들어낸 공간이기도 하다.

모태로부터 세상으로 나와 인간의 시력을 갖기 이전에 우리는 무엇을 보았을까? 죽음을 앞두고 눈을 감으며 마지막으로 보게 되는 것은 무엇일까? 어쩌면 그 공간은 다음 생을 위해 잠시 머무르는 곳일 수도 있고, 영원한 기다림 속에 존재하는 중간 상태일 수도 있다. Noise 작업을 통해 나는 인간이 의식과 기억 사이에서 실존하는 공간을 벗어날 수 없다는 것, 그리고 보이지 않는 것들의 실재에 대해 이야기하고자 한다.

When we open our eyes, light falls upon things, and as it passes through the retina to the brain we perceive the shapes, colors, and brightness of the world. When we close our eyes, we are left in a state where nothing can be seen. Yet even in darkness there are afterimages that slowly surface. Like faint images gradually revealed through a steady gaze, we perceive something even when sight is cut off.

This work began as an inquiry into this phenomenon between light and darkness. Images that do not vanish when we close our eyes, but come alive in another dimension, within our senses and imagination. Floating in dark space, severed from reality, these forms are not mere visual afterimages; they are a space woven from our memory and consciousness.

What did we see before we came into the world from the womb and gained human sight? What will we see last, closing our eyes before death? Perhaps that space is where we stay briefly for the next life, or an in-between state of eternal waiting. Through the Noise series I speak of how human beings cannot escape the space that exists between consciousness and memory — and of the reality of things unseen.
